Dexter Fields leads strong second half charge.
After a slow and relatively boring first half that had most in attendance sitting on their hands, the Racers got it going in the last 20 minutes to send EIU away with their 16th loss of the season.
The most exciting stat of the game came from #23 who, after shooting 0 for 5 in the first half, hit all four of his three point attempts in the second half of the game.
I heard from many people close to the team last year that one of the best shooters was the transfer from UAB. I was constantly told "Wait until you see this guy play next year." This of course hadn't really come to fruition until last night in the final 20 minutes.
You may say confidence is an issue. Dexter tweeted out earlier in the season that he "couldn't throw the ball in the ocean." You may say it's fundamental. Dexter spoke to WPSD after the game saying he wasn't getting underneath his shot and basically shooting flat footed. Whatever those cases may be hopefully they are behind Dex now.
Fields hit a few three's on passes from Canaan and hit one in transition. One fan told me after the game that "Well, it was EIU." My response to that is, it doesn't matter. Sure we will play teams who are more athletic than EIU but with defenders constantly worrying about Isaiah Canaan, Fields has had open shots all season and will continue to get them. If Dexter can continue to hit with consistency, this team will be tough for anyone to beat on any given night. If Stacy Wilson can find his shot again Murray State is a Top 25 team.
Canaan finished with 17 and it's already been established that he will get his close to 20 points every single game. Ed Daniel is good for about 10 to 15 every game. Now, when it comes to Murray State upsetting Belmont for the OVC title, Wilson and Fields are going to be the reason they do or they don't.
With the win last night, Murray State is now 13-4 overall and 4-1 in OVC play giving them a 2 game lead on SIU-Edwardsville who they play tomorrow. There are plenty of games left but unless something terrible happens I can not imagine a scenario where Murray State will have to win more than two games in Municipal Auditorium.
