College football teams started practicing today. Murray State has a lot to work on, if they expect to win a lot of games this year.
Unlike recent years, Racer football fans have high expectations for the team this year. But, high expectations can lead to disappointment. if the Racers can't solve their issues, they may lose three to five games this year. It's time to out outline the good and the bad of this years football team.

Berry Still Not Enrolled.
Jamaal Berry who verbally committed to Murray State a week ago and could be eleigible to play this season, has yet to officially enroll at Murray State University.
The status of the star/troubled runnning back is kind of up in the air right now. Jeff Bidwell tweeted last night that although Berry may still end up in a Racer uniform he doesn't think that he will be enrolled at Murray anytime soon.
Still every Ohio State news outlet is saying Berry is leaving the Buckeyes for Murray State, every poster on a message board with a "close source" says the same but still Berry isn't here and until he is I suppose it cannot be "official."

Racer Recruiting Update: Murray State Offers 3-Star Chris Perry

It may not be "new" news but it is still worth noting that Murray State has offered 6'8" 245 pound center, Chris Perry.
The center from Bartow, Florida has numerous offers from other big mid-majors such as Butler, Dayton and Memphis (if you still consider them mid-major). Miami and Minnesota also join the long list of schools that have offered Perry a scholarship.
Perry averaged over 13 points a game last season and also collected over 11 rebounds a game to go with it.

This week, MKY Sports sends you to Austin Peay to get an update on how they are trying to modernize their basketball arena. SEMO brags about their defensive lineman, who is being named for a ton of preseason awards, yet, they will probably have a losing season.

Dwight Howard Trade Rumor Update
The talks all summer have not only been about the Olympics. The NBA is revolving around one player, and that's the Orlando Magic's center, Dwight Howard (A.K.A Man-child).
There have multiple rumors involving, what seems to be, only two teams. Howard has come out not once, but twice that he will not sign an extension with the Magic and wants to be traded. The two teams that have been interested in Howard have been the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers.

Charleston Classic Bracket Announced: Racers Vs Tigers in Round 1
The pairings for the 2012 Charleston Classic are out and Murray State will take on the Auburn Tigers on November 16th at 7 PM CT on ESPN3.
The winner of that game will go on to play the winner of College of Charleston and St. Johns, meaning the Racers will not have to play Baylor or Colorado until the Championship Round.
Auburn will be a very winnable game for Murray State as the Tigers are coming off a losing season with a record of 15-16.

Racer Football Talk with Conor: Defensive Line
If you can't stop the run, then you're going to have problems. Last year, the Racers run defense was bad, not just bad, but awful. That's why the Racers lost four games, and were left out of the NCAA FCS Tournament.
Yes, the Racer were awful last year, when it came to trying to stop the run last year. They allowed 150 yards per game on the ground in 2011. In fact, they only allowed less than 100 yards rushing, twice.
If you were an OVC running back, you wanted to play Murray State in 2011.

4-Star Ohio State Tailback Transferring to Murray State
One of the top recruits in Ohio State's 2009 recruiting class, Jaamal Berry has transferred to Murray State and is eligible to play this year.
Listed at 5'10" and 200 pounds, Berry was a 4-star recruit coming out of High School. He redshirted his Freshman season and in 2010 was a back-up tailback for the Buckeyes. In that time he recorded a 67 yard touchdown run versus Eastern Michigan and averaged over 25 yards per kickoff return.

My thoughts on the OVC Media Day
The OVC had their annual media day this week. OVC Sports Information Directors and media voted on their top players and predicted the finish for this upcoming OVC football season.EKU stole the headlines with 10 players being named to the OVC preseason team, but Murray State and SEMO have the two best players.
My thoughts are at the bottom of the page, after all of the headlines.
Stampede Sales
The incoming freshmen class is excited about the upcoming football and basketball seasons as many of them have already signed up for the Stampede this year. Matter of fact the incoming freshmen have added more members than the other three classes combined.
Last season The Stampede finished off the year with over 500 members. Going into this season, Morris White, the director of Marketing and Promotions, wants to reach at least 1,000 members.

Complete Domination by the Cards
I figure why sugar coat what happened this past weekend in St. Louis. The Cardinals completely dominated the Cubbies. The Cubs managed to score 1 run on Friday and they were shut down the next two. The Cardinals had come into the weekend losing 5 out of 6. The Cubs came in winning 14 out of their last 19.
My did things change.
The Cardinals needed a sweep bad. Falling farther behind the Reds and Pirates did not need to happen. Unfortunately they both swept this past weekend as well so no ground was gained. But one thing that should have been gained was a revitalized Cardinals team. They absolutely destroyed the Cubs. Giving up one run and shutting out the Cubs in consecutive games for the first time since 1989. The Cardinals also decided to score twelve runs in the 7th inning during Saturdays game. They tied a team record with those runs that had last been done in 1926.

Cubs-Cardinals: How to Examine a 22 Run Difference
So lets take a look back at this historically bad weekend for the Cubs and then never mention it again.
Recruit Profile: Dexter Fields
Dexter Fields transferred to Murray State from UAB. After sitting out last season he looks to fill the shoes of Donte Poole as the Racer's best three point shooter.Fields is included in the weekly recruit profiles because we did not get to see him play last year as he sat out due to transferring. However, we heard a lot about Dexter last season. As fans, we heard he was the best shooter in practice and that in 2012 he would be be Murray State's biggest threat from behind the arc. To temper expectation some, I think it is fair to say that "practice stories" are fun to hear about but should be taken with a grain of salt.
Penn State: Are the NCAA's sanctions fair?
The Penn State football program learned their fate today, and the sanctions may have been worse than the death penalty.NCAA President, Mark Emmert, announced that Penn State won't be eligible for post-season play for the next four seasons. Penn State will also only have 15 scholarships, instead of 25 for the next four seasons, and they will vacate all their wins from 1998-2011. The NCAA also fined the Nittany Lions 60 million dollars

Titans Talk: Kenny Britt's Gr8tness
For the 8th time since being drafted in 2007, Tennessee Titan wide receiver, Kenny Britt was arrested.
According to the report Kenny Britt and former janitor Tommie Campbell were returning a female soldier to Fort Cambell when Britt failed a field sobriety test and was arrested for a DUI.
Kenny Britt is arguably the Titans best wide receiver but after 8 arrests in 5 seasons, one has to ask where is the discipline for these acts? After how many arrests should a player have a permanent ban from the league bestowed upon them? How long should Roger Goodell or NFL owners put up with this behavior?
Since the Super Bowl ended in February, there have been a total of 27 NFL players arrested proving that their unrelenting commitment to breaking the law is still an ongoing problem that must be dealt with.

Does Penn State really deserve the death penalty?
Could the Penn State football program receive the harshest penalty that the NCAA hands down, the death penalty?
Word on the street, is yes. NCAA President, Mark Emmert has said that any punishment could be handed over to the Penn State football program as of right now.
The sex abuse scandal is one of the saddest things college football has ever seen. Penn State needs penalties, but how harsh should they be?

Chicago Bulls: A Year to Forget and an Unsure Future
If you ask any Bulls fan what the expectations for the 2011-2012 season were, they would all say championship bound.
The fact that the Bulls had the reigning MVP in Derrick Rose, the coach of the year in Tom Thibodeau, and the acquisition of Richard “Rip” Hamilton to complement an already deep team would have anyone salivating.
However, that was not the case at all.

Race to the Chase: Wildcard Hopefuls
![]() |
| Gordon will have to have better luck than this to make the Chase |
After a win last weekend at New Hampshire Kasey Kahne became the leader of the wildcard hopefuls. As the only driver in wildcard position to have 2 wins, it would take an unlikely situation to drop Kahne out of the Chase. Having two wins means 2 drivers would have to hit the two win mark and pass Kahne in the standings to drop him for his wildcard spot. The three drivers with the best ability to do that would be Kyle Busch, Ryan Newman, and Joey Logano who each own a win a piece. With only 7 races left the probability of this happening is diminishing, although through these next 7 races you best believe Kahne will be keeping a close eye on these two. Another win would surely solidify Kahnes chances, but at this point he's looking more like a lock for the Chase.
Murray State Vs. Valparaiso December 29th.

The first of these games will take place at the CFSB Center on December 29th. Two foreign forwards led the Crusaders in scoring last year, so Ed Daniel and Erik McCree will have their hands full down low. As far as the back court goes...who on Valpo is going to stop Canaan and Zay?
Jeff Bidwell of WPSD offers more insight into the game and more scheduling news for the Racers on his blog: here.

Hats off to the guys over there. Referring to the citizens of Murray as a bunch of redneck/country bumpkins is a refreshing new insult that none of us have ever heard before. Here is an excerpt from their piece:
Cards Gain No Ground
The Cardinals flew to Milwaukee with high hopes. They had a three game stint against the Brewers, who are currently 4th in the NL Central. At the same point, the division leading Cincinnati Reds hosted the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Pittsburgh Pirates visited the Colorado Rockies. The Reds' series is a 4-game set, which will finish up tomorrow. The Pirates-a three game series.
The Reds dropped two of their three contests with Arizon, while the Pirates went 2-1 against the Rockies. A sweep for the Cardinals would put them 2.5 games back of both Pitt and Cincy, as the two are tied with a 51-40 record.

Weber Signs Offer Sheet
7/19/2012 MORNING UPDATE AT BOTTOM

Shea Weber has signed a 14 year offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers.
The amount of money on the 14 year deal has not been specified. All that is publicly known is that the deal is worth $100+ million. The Nashville Predators have 7 days to match the offer, or choose to accept the compensation, as determined by the rules of the current CBA.
If Weber's deal is worth $109,693,066 or more over that time period ($7,835,219+ per year), the Flyers would owe Nashville 4 first round picks. If the deal is worth a dollar less than that, Philly would owe the Preds 2 first round picks, a second rounder and a third. If the Predators match the offer, they agree to the exact terms Weber signed to with Philadelphia. They also lose their right to trade Weber for the first year of the contract. After that, regular rules apply.

Racer Football Talk with Conor: Offensive Line
The offensive line is the second most important position on offense. Only, the quarterback position is more important.
Why? The quarterback has to have time to throw the football and the running back has to have a good offensive line to go anywhere. Without either, you're setting up yourself for trouble and a lot of it.

Wednesday Weekly Wrap-Up Brought to You by Drunk College Students
![]() |
| For the 22,000+ who voted yes, is this what you wanted? People in sweaters, drinking Miller Lite out of a Cheerleading Megaphone? |
The city of Murray is soon to be overtaken by drunk college students and there will be no stopping these hooligans from destroying the town. Think what will happen if Murray State makes it to the Sweet 16 this year, cars will be flipped over, couches will burned in the street because people no longer have to drive 30-45 minutes to purchase packaged alcohol.
Murray is expanding but is it worth it? In a recent study of 39,000 alcohol-related traffic accidents in Kentucky found that more of dry counties' residents are involved in such crashes. (dwi-austin-tx.com)

Grow Murray: Alcohol at CFSB?
With the
recent success of the Grow Murray movement, packaged alcohol sales are now
legal and licensed in the city of Murray. Yes, you read that correctly. Murray
is now a wet town.
Now the
larger question at hand is whether or not this can possibly impact athletics
here at Murray State and the surrounding Murray community. There are definitely
pros and cons as a result of this new change, but sometimes change is needed.
Could we
possibly be seeing alcohol inside the CFSB some time in the near future?
Alcohol at football games? Would this heighten or hamper your fan experience at
sporting events?

Recruit Profile: Zabius Henderson
Continuing with our weekly recruit profile, I finally get the opportunity to write about a recruit that I have actually seen play in person.
At the open scrimmage I noticed Zabius as the tall and long-armed center reminding one of Tony Easley in a way. Although he isn't listed as tall as Easley, Zabius has about 25 pounds on the former Murray State Big Man.
If you read the open scrimmage notes, I mentioned Zabius seemed quicker than he looked. He made cuts to the basket , he executed pick and rolls nicely and he came up with a few blocks. From what I have seen Zabius will not be one of our strongest scoring threats, although I did see him hit a few mid-range jumpers. What he will be is a strong presence at the rim and being an overall defensive specialists with his long arms.

DJ's Soapbox: Owners and their growing piece of pie
Last year it was the NFL and the NBA both looking a work stoppage dead in the eye. The NFL, got an agreement done before the season, however the NBA missed quite a chunk of it's regular season. It was not too long ago, 2004-2005 that the NHL missed it's entire season. Why are all these labor negotiations going sour? What's the deal? How can these multi-millionaires be so upset with life that they cease to operate the league, simply because the players and owners can't get along?A huge hang up for both sides, in each respective league, is the revenue sharing. The owners in each league are wanting a bigger piece of that tasty revenue pie. The NHL operated last season with players getting 57% of the revenue, while the owners had to settle for a less delectable 43%. Now the owners in the NHL are seeking a 54% share of the revenue, reducing the players to 46%. Sounds great if you're an owner of an NHL franchise, if you're a player you've surely came to screeching stop saying, "Woah, you want HOW much of that pie?!"
A Clean Sweep
Well, that sucked.
The St. Louis Cardinals came out of the the All-Star Break a game and a half back of the Cincinnati Reds, with a 3-game series with the Reds first up on the post-break schedule. A sweep of the Reds would have put the Cardinals 1.5 games up on the Reds, and with the Pirates going 1-2 against the Brewers this weekend, that would have put the Cardinals a half game back for the division lead.
That's not how it happened.

Murray State Basketball Recruit MVP of Slam Orange Tournament
A name that has frequented this blog has been that of RJ Currington. The 2013 shooting guard put on a display at the Slam Orange Tournament this afternoon which included a 27 point game and Co-MVP honors. In terms of recruiting this can be viewed as a good thing and a bad thing. Good because, if Steve Prohm lands RJ we know we're getting a player who can come in and make a difference right away. Bad because other big schools, at least those who haven't offered RJ already, might be adding him to their recruitment real soon. Which means, of course, more competition for Prohm and company to recruit against.
Titans Ranked 20th in New Preseason Power Ranking

According to
Pro Football Talk’s new power rankings, the Tennessee Titans are slotted at #20
at this point of the preseason. While a Titans fan myself, it is difficult to
argue any different.
Tennessee
faces a torturous schedule for the upcoming 2012 season. The first four
opponents include New England, San Diego, Detroit, and Houston. All of which
can very easily be losses. Before their
bye week in week 10, the Titans also have games against Pittsburgh and
Chicago. Again, both of these games will
be extremely difficult.
The Titans
face five playoff teams from last year and must find some way of winning the majority
of those. The Titans close the season with tough games against the Texans,
Jets, and Packers. To say the least, the Titans have been dealt very few lucky
breaks.
Frankie G's Weekly NASCAR Pitstop: New Hampshire
While we have been praying for rain here in Kentucky, the people at New Hampshire Motor Speedway were praying that the rain would hold off long enough for Sprint Cup to finish this afternoon. The rain luckily held off, and NASCAR was able to complete both races this weekend as planned. Let's take a look at this weekends races. In Nationwide Brad Keslowski won the pole and had the lead around lap 150 when a caution caused by Danica Patrick bumping Jason Bowels caused a caution. This allowed for Kevin Harvick to gain the lead. He eventually lost the lead when Amber Cope caused him to slow down. This allowed for Keslowski to regain the lead with 21 to go. Keslowski would hold on to the lead and take the checkered flag. After the race Harvick made this statement on Cope, " It's somebody who shouldn't be on the race track, who has no idea what their doing in the race car. She wants to be Danica Patrick, but she can't hold her helmet." The win added to a great year for Keslowski with 3 wins in Sprint Cup and now 1 in Nationwide.
Joe Paterno: A Man Who Used to be a Legend
A year ago, Joe Paterno was Penn State's 86-year-old football coach. Many college football fans thought of Paterno as a legend who was known for winning and loved the game of football. Today, Paterno is no longer known as just a legend. His name will forever be linked to the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal case. Some believe that Penn State did the wrong thing by firing him. Others felt like justice had been served. It doesn't matter what side you are on, Sandusky name will always be linked to Joe Paterno.
What if Paterno had stepped in and reported Sandusky? Paterno would probably still be known as a winner. We can bring up the "what if's" forever. The damage is done. Paterno lost his job and life over the Sandusky sex scandal.

Practice Facility Update

The new practice facility in front of the CFSB Center is well on its way toward completion and from now until it is completed sometime around December, we will do a weekly update on its progress.
This rendering to the right shows what the facility will look like...pretty impressive right? Coach Prohm believes that this will help get our program to that next level and sure it will. This is that something extra we will be able to show off to recruits.

NHL Owners Blow Our Minds
Some reports have surfaced detailing the conditions the NHL Owners are proposing be put into place for the new NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
If these reports are accurate, we're screwed.
The current CBA expires on September 15th. Although its currently only July 13th, the reported proposal from the owners does not lead to confidence in regards to a lockout being avoided.
Here are the proposed conditions, per Renaud Lavoie, hockey reporter for RDS (Canadian sports outlet):
1. The players' hockey related revenues will be reduced to 46% from 57%.
2. Players will have to be in the NHL for 10 seasons before they can become unrestricted free agents.
3. Contracts will have a maximum term of 5 years.
4. No more salary arbitration.
5. Entry-level contracts will be 5 years in length instead of 3.

Notes From Today's Open Scrimmage
Most of the Murray State players got together for a little pick-up scrimmage this afternoon. I was told I could not share too much information about what I saw at Today's scrimmage but I will be able to share my impressions of the players.Erik McCree
I start with him because he was the most impressive player out there today. On several occasions McCree took his man one on one to the basket and finished. His jumper at times looked a little flat but mostly, from what I have seen, the lefty has good form and a soft touch. He took over many of times and showed off his strength and athleticism and ability to get the rim whenever he wanted. Look for Erik to replace the injured Mushatt and be a starter at least at some point in the seson.
Brow versus Cal - Kentucky in the Spotlight
Kentucky was well represented in the exhibition game last night on ESPN between the Dominican Republic, led by the University of Kentucky’s very own John Calipari, and the United States Olympic team.
Anthony Davis was added last minute to the USA Olympic team following a Blake Griffin diagnosis of a meniscus tear, which requires surgery. Davis, who was the 2012 No. 1 overall draft pick by the New Orleans Hornets, was one of the final cuts for the 2012 Olympic team to play in London.
Friday's Racer Round Up

A lot of headlines dealing with Murray State basketball and football players (former and present) have been released the past few days so let us summarize all of it for you, the reader.
Tony Easley and Ray George have been invited to NBA Summer Camps. Tony Easley will be playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves this summer and Ray George will be with the Milwaukee Bucks.

With the recent success of driver Austin Dillon in his rookie season of Nationwide, many have raised the question of what will happen when Dillon moves up to Sprint Cup. This question is triggered by the fact that Dillon drives the 3 car for Childress racing. There are many fans out there who believe the 3 should be retired due to the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr and others who believe it's time to bring back the 3 car. What would bringing back the legendary number mean to NASCAR? Is it a good decision to bring back the 3 car? These are the questions I would like to try to answer.Valparaiso Coming to The Bank?
Jeff Bidwell of WPSD News in Paducah is reporting that Murray State could be close to inking a home and home with last years Horizon League Champion. The Crusaders, who went 22-12 last season, defeated Butler in the Horizon League Semis before losing to Detroit in the championship. They will make for a decent opponent next season as their top two scorers from last season will return. Kevin Van Wijk and Ryan Broekhoff both averaged over 14 points per game last season.
The Cardinals Looking Forward
The Cardinals' season has been nothing short of interesting so far. They started out well and then limped through May and the beginning of June. The Cards started to finally show signs of life again leading up to the All-Star break. The team has now made it back to 6 games over .500 and are only 2.5 games back of the Pirates and Reds. The good thing about the Cards is they've been here before. This is a team full of experience and the offense is there. If you are looking for a weakness, the Cards' big one is their bullpen. I'd probably look for them to try and make a move to bolster the bullpen, just like they did last year. Also, with Chris Carpenter officially done for the season, a move for another starter seems like a necessity.Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Racer Football Talk with Conor: Wide Receivers
The Racers are strong, deep, and experienced at the wide receiver position this year.Eight guys had over 200 yards receiving last year and five of them are returning to the Racers for the 2012 season.Three of the returning receivers had over 400 receiving yards last years.
These receivers are experienced, five of the 12 receivers are seniors. Add in a top quarterback and you have a recipe for success.
So who are the guys to watch out for this year?
My top pick would be Walter Powell. Powell led the team with 584 yards receiving and with five touchdowns. He's a great option when the Racers are in a third down and long situation. He averaged 13.0 yards a catch.
