Cubs-Cardinals: How to Examine a 22 Run Difference

Just as the Cubs were starting to play good baseball winning 8 out of their last 10, they ran into a buzz saw in St. Louis this weekend. Things got bad on Friday, embarrassing on Saturday and by Sunday it was just laughable.

So lets take a look back at this historically bad weekend for the Cubs and then never mention it again.

FRIDAY

Bottom of the First

The treachery began early in the opening game as Carlos Beltran singled to left allowing Allen Craig to score. Yadier Molina singled a batter later bringing in Matt Holiday and Beltran scored on a fielders choice the next at bat. (Cards 3, Cubs 0)

Top of the 2nd

Darwin Barney hits a sacrifice fly. Tagging and scoring is Bryan Lahair. The only run the Cubbies scored all series came on an out, how sad. (Cards 3, Cubs 1)

Bottom of the 3rd

Matt Holiday launches number 18 to the seats in left. (Cards 4, Cubs 1)

So that concluded Friday and for 6 innings on Saturday things weren't all that bad. Sure the Cubs still made scoring a run seem less like the objective of a baseball game but still we were all knotted up at zero.

SATURDAY

Bottom of the 7th

Rafael Furcal got the scoring going with a RBI base hit to left. (Cards 5, Cubs 1)

Skip Schumaker skipped a line drive triple to right. (Cards 7, Cubs 1)

Beltran belted a ground rule double. (Cards 8, Cubs 1)

David Freese hit a frozen rope double down the line. (Cards 10, Cubs 1)

Jon Jay hit another Cards double scoring 2 more. (Cards 12, Cubs 1)

Double...Allen Craig (Cards 13, Cubs 1)

Double...Skip Schumaker (Cards 14, Cubs 1)

Double...Matt Holiday (Cards 16, Cubs 1)

The bright side, the Cubs shut.... them.... down in the 8th.

SUNDAY

The last day of the series only furthered Cub fans misery as they hoped to at least salvage one game in the series. Their hopes of doing that quickly diminished.

Bottom of the First

Cubs came out clicking their heels in honor of Ron Santo and the Cardinals came out punching the Cubs in the mouth yet again.

Double....Jon Jay (Cards 18, Cubs 1)

Double...Tony Cruz (Cards 20, Cubs 1)

Bottom of the Fourth

Tyler Greene Sac Fly but it's cool 'cause we got an out. (Cards 21, Cubs 1)

Bottom of the Fifth

Matt Holiday deposits a ball into the left field seats. (Cards 22, Cubs 1)

Next pitch sees the same result courtesy of Carlos Beltran (Cards 23, Cubs 1)

This may have been the worst sweep I have ever seen a team take, absolute domination by the inner-division arch rival. It hurts but the Cards will be in Wrigley on Friday, so winning one game would be nice.
